Self Expression

Who were we before the world told us who to be? Who are we when we are our most authentic selves? Letting go of expectations and responsibilities lets us see who we are at the core. "People often say that this person or that person has not found himself. But the self is not something that one finds. It is something that one creates", Thomas Szasz.


Throughout life, our only real obligation is to create something worth living. Defining and redefining what it means to be alive requires self-expression. The willingness to be free and open yourself up to others without fear of judgment. To bring reality to all of the thoughts that live inside of us. To communicate your feelings openly and honestly. The beauty of self-expression is that you can do this in any way you choose.


Doing activities like writing in a journal, playing your favorite instrument, painting, drawing, or any other form of creativity is the gateway to expressing yourself in the most authentic way. Painting allows me to disconnect from the world. There are no expectations that I have to meet. I don't feel the need to compete with anyone else. I never feel obligated. It's just me and the paintbrush and somehow that's enough.


Finding moments like those, to simply be yourself and live in the moment is essential.
Finding the things you enjoy doing takes time. But when you do find them, don't let go. Pursue it passionately. Without hesitation. Give yourself up wholeheartedly into something greater. Then share your gifts with the world. Because no one can do it but you.
